The Story of Set for Success

Supporting General Certificate candidates as they prepare for their exams.

The Story of Set for Success

Each year around 1700 learners (or brewing and distilling superstars of the future as we like to call them) from around the world, study for IBD General Certificate exams. They range from aspiring team leaders in global brewing and distilling companies to home brewers and distillers who want to learn brewing and distilling from the experts.

Learners get everything they need to do well in the exam from our online self-directed learning material. This has been written by subject matter experts in a way that strikes the perfect balance between conciseness and explaining concepts in sufficient depth to ensure they are clear. The material features a multitude of top-quality illustrations and videos along with interactive quizzes that allow learners to check their understanding as they go.

It’s fair to say for that most people, sitting for an exam is not the highlight of any learning experience and with remote self-directed learning without classmates to share the experience with, it can become even more daunting. Plus with everything in life, practice makes perfect. This is the reason we offer Set for Success.

Set for Success is available for brewing in Spanish and English and distilling in English. These online tutorial sessions allow learners to attempt multiple choice questions on the General Certificate learning material, under the guidance of industry experts. Set for Success allows them to gauge their readiness for their exam and identify areas where fine-tuning of their knowledge is required.

The Set for Success tutors are all IBD qualified and share a wealth of knowledge and experience as they guide learners through the questions. These amazing people, come from all across the world and provide their help on a voluntary basis. We recently advertised for more tutors and were inundated with applications from talented brewers and distillers. This speaks volumes about the wonderful industry in which we work and central role of the IBD in helping share knowledge and best practice.

As well as attempting the multiple-choice questions, learners can receive clarification on technical points and get to know each other over the chat function.

For those who can’t make all the sessions, recordings are available for learners to watch at their leisure. Feedback from learners has been overwhelmingly positive and we use this to improve Set for Success on a continual basis. Does Set for Success work? The average percentage of learners who undertook Set for Success passing the exam is 30% higher than those who didn’t, so it is fair to say that it does!
