Rob Obree - Diploma in Brewing Module 3 Tutor

Rob brings extensive experience as an engineer and consultant, with 12 years working in the brewing industry. An automation engineer by qualification, Rob also trained as a brewer, combining technical and automation expertise covering all aspects of beer production.

He started his industry career in 2008 at South African Breweries, Newlands Brewery (Cape Town), in Automation Systems before progressing to several senior engineering roles. Rob later joined AB InBev, Newlands Brewery, and for the last ten years has been helping to reduce the brewery’s water and energy consumption.

Rob holds a BSc ENG Mechatronics from the University of Cape Town (2008) and completed the IBD Diploma in Brewing in 2015. He also has a South Africa Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) in 2018, required in South Africa to work in a Senior Site Engineering role in a large factory. Rob has been a member of the IBD since 2014.

He now runs his own business as a utilities optimisations consultant, helping food and beverage producers to automate processes through data analysis, bringing Diploma candidates a unique perspective on the beer production process.

Living and working out of Cape Town, Rob loves nothing more than a good hoppy beer and the activities in the outdoors including sailing, cycling and surfing.
