Bacardi’s Bombay Sapphire distillery in deepest Hampshire

Bombay Sapphire is the world’s number one premium gin by value and the fastest-growing premium gin(1). Now part of the Bacardi portfolio, the brand only came into existence in its distinctive square blue bottle in 1987. According to UK data from Nielsen, the brand is No1 by value in the UK and No2 by volume. Sales are in the order of 3.1m 9L cases a year and rising by 11% a year(2). Today all of the Bombay Spirits Company gins come from a site at Laverstoke Mill amongst the rolling wooded hills of north Hampshire, just 60 miles west of London.

The art of brewing dates back at least 5,000 years to Mesopotamia. Most cereals contain sugars that can undergo spontaneous fermentation due to wild yeasts in the air and it is possible that beer-like beverages were independently developed throughout the world soon after a tribe or culture had domesticated cereal.

On a bright day in June I journeyed from Dublin to Cavan in the agricultural heart of Ireland where I, along with others, had been invited to attend the launch event of Emmerald Polymers’ new Green Keg made from HDPE plastic (High Density Polyethylene).
