Beer and the good life
By: Charlie Bamforth
01/12/2014
For many, the modern perception of beer seems light-years away from that which prevailed in the first half of the twentieth century in the British Isles. Were our Irish friends really able to say ‘Guinness is good for you’? Did Sir Bernard Miles truly regale us on the television by telling us that Mackeson ‘looks good, tastes good and it certainly does you good’?

It is a fair statement to make that Spain has been, for a very long time, a lager-drinking country. However, the past couple of years have seen a modest shift in the paradigm of the Spanish beer market. Spaniards love their food and they love their wine. However, that same affection is yet to be shown to beer. To even suggest that beer could be equal, if not better than wine, in terms of food pairings is near blasphemous to the ears of many.
