The craft brewing scene in Ireland has had a magnificent revival over the last ten years. At last count, 29 craft brewers have established themselves on the island, one for nearly every county. The recent Alltech Craft Brewing and Distilling Convention emphasised the huge interest in this fast-growing sector.One of the chief figures in this revival has been Seamus O’Hara.
Focus on the Diageo International Supply Centre at Runcorn

The Diageo International Supply centre at Runcorn in Cheshire is what many previously knew as the Guinness Packaging Centre. With brewing now centred on St James’s Gate in Dublin, small-pack packaging takes place in Belfast and Runcorn. Both sites are forecast to package approx 15 million cases this year, which for Runcorn is equivalent to around 2.7 million hectolitres.

I had always wanted to visit Harviestoun ever since its Bitter and Twisted beer won the Champion Smallpack Ale at the Brewing Industry International Awards back in 2004. Its grapefruity aromas beat 161 other beers and added to its Champion Beer of Britain accolade won the year before. It was the harbinger of the citrus golden ale fashion to come.

The Publican’s Morning Advertiser on-trade publication hosted its second Beer Innovation Summit at St George’s Park near Burton on Trent at the end of February. Some 150 delegates were on the list; the organisers thought that was a good turnout considering the juxta-positioning of Craft Beer Rising and BeerX.

Pálinka is recognised as Hungary’s national drink – a Hungaricum, a term used for products originating from and usually produced only in Hungary. Similarly to Scotch, Hungary’s national drink may only be called pálinka if it has been distilled in Hungary.
