When faced with a severe keg shortage in the hot summer of 2003, Braumeister Georg Fischer and Senior Manager Wolfgang Koch at the 25,000hL Ankerbrauerei in the southern German town of Noerdlingen, came up with a novel solution – Beer in a Box.

What could be simpler? The brewer carefully brews and ferments his beer then transfers to a sealed wooden cask for a short maturation and delivery to a pub. The landlord will then place the cask on the bar, carefully insert a tap, relieve the pressure and deliver mugs of foaming beer to his delighted customers. Empty casks are swapped with full, then returned to the brewery for cleaning and refilling. A beautifully simple system, what possibly could be done to improve on this way of serving beer?

Orkney bere for Arran whisky

Next month, a single malt Orkney bere whisky will be released by Isle of Arran Distillers. This has been produced in collaboration with the Agronomy Institute (AI) at Orkney College (University of the Highlands and Islands) and was made with bere, Scotland’s oldest cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare), supplied by the AI.

Early in May, some 22 intrepid members of the IBD Southern UK Section met at St Pancras Station to catch the Eurostar train to Brussels.
