Bottling the dream - Developments continue apace
By: Eric Candy
01/09/2012
Bottling is probably the Cinderella of packaging formats. It is often seen as the premium small-pack format, offering embryonic opportunities for new brands whilst also facilitating wider distribution than large pack, where the take-home market potentials and need for economies of scale can be key.

The Hop Back Brewery celebrates 25 years!
By: James Godman
01/09/2012
Back in the late 70s and early 80s the early shoots of UK craft brewing were nurtured in the brewpubs established in London and elsewhere by some of the large pub owning brewery groups. Double-digit percentage growth is forecast for the coming years and the market could be around 70 mhl by 2025.

By: Roger Putman

Hot on the heels of our Institute’s 125th anniversary comes that of UK-based brewery supply company Murphy and Son. Bristolian Albert John Murphy used to travel for brewery chemists Sutton and Phillips in the 1880s before buying the Vanguard Chemical works in Leeds in 1887. As S&P became part of Murphys in 2002 they could claim it was their 133rd birthday but I suppose that would not have the same symmetry about it.
Spike turns cactus into cocktails - A novel vodka from Texas
By: Nick Spink
01/09/2012
At the beginning of this year, Spink Distilling opened its doors at San Antonio in Texas and set out to change the world, well at least set out to change the vodka industry. Its label, Spike, is marriage material – a first of its kind. The spirit is not infused or flavoured but made directly from cactus plants – and Spink is the only distillery in the world producing such a vodka.
The mystery of the under-sized still: The London Distillery Company
By: Alan Powell

A few years ago, I was relaxing in the London Members Rooms of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, chatting with the former manager, Darren Rook, about whisky production and was asked whether HMRC would license a distillery with an ‘under-sized’ still (that is, one of less than 18hl capacity).
