Africa – alive and kicking

Wow – what a year that was for the IBD Africa Section which goes from strength to strength! We have had increased membership, a new Committee with many new faces, realigned representation and format, as well as our very first East Africa Chairman. The launch of a focused Continuous Professional Development Programme (CPD) and a set of subsidised focused training courses led to the Section’s best ever examination results. We will have a grand finale with our Convention in Uganda.

I have always told people that I come from a long line of Buckinghamshire peasants. So it was a particular pleasure to be invited to visit the oldest brewery in the Chiltern Hills. I guess I half expected everyone to look like me (perish the thought) but they were all indoors as it rained all day.

Globally, water has come to the forefront as a sustainability issue which needs increased intervention to alleviate current crisis levels. Population increases, particularly in urban areas, increase the direct demand for clean water but also the indirect demand through food and goods requirements. At the same time, good quality water availability is hindered by climate change in some areas and industrial pollution.

The Africa Section held its first CPD event in South Africa last March at Gilroy’s micro brewery in the north of Johannesburg which was started, owned and run by Steve Gilroy who arrived in South Africa in 1970 – by invitation of the South African Government as a mechanical engineer.
