Busy, busy, busy and business like - Brau Beviale 2010

By: Roger Putman

01/12/2010

I penned the headline as last month’s Brau Beviale exhibition was heaving with people and I really thought that confidence had returned to the European brewing sector with brewers turning out in droves to seek out new opportunities for investment. Hordes of visitors were wandering aimlessly with cell phones clamped to their ears making getting around a slow business.

CERB – The Italian Brewing Centre

By: Caroline Walker, Giuseppe Perretti

01/12/2010

The Italians are not famous for being a beer drinking nation, but times are changing. Today Italy boasts 14 breweries and a thriving microbrewery scene of some 300 breweries. Possibly fuelled by the younger generation rebelling against their parent’s favourite tipple, beer consumption in Italy has grown from 23 litres per head in 1990 to 28 litres today (reaching a high of 31 litres in 2007, before the international consumption contraction).

Esau & Hueber maximise potential

By: Paul Buttrick

01/12/2010

In November 2007, I wrote a profile of Esau & Hueber in this magazine under the title ‘Technological Kicks’. I was impressed by the way the company was developing innovative solutions to some of the brewing industry’s perennial problems. The introduction of the Turbo Air two-component jet for the aeration of wort and its adaption to beer carbonation and nitrogenation, followed by yeast revitalisation and propagation, gave a simple innovative approach to improving beer quality and consistency.

The domestication of barley

By: Ian Hornsey

01/12/2010

The origin of agriculture is one of the seminal events in human culture. The development of domestic animals and crops from wild species laid the foundation for the Neolithic revolution some 10,000–12,000 years ago and resulted in the transition of hunter-gatherer groups to sedentary, pastoral and farming societies.

The place of information technology in enterprise change

By: Ivan Lloyd

01/12/2010

Well-managed IT Projects should be vital elements of enterprise change – so why are they often not? There is a potential disconnect between business objectives and ‘technology tunnel vision’ where IT projects can often be selected based on a desire to implement a particular technology as opposed to aligning to business objectives.

A look at the largest farmer-controlled grain business in the UK

By: Michael Parsons

01/12/2010

All is safely gathered in... the barley stores are full all along the chain from farm to maltster. The downside to this apparently happy situation is that the screen, on the malting barley desk in the trading room at Honey Pot Lane shows very little movement.

Project management - Making sure you do it right

By: Ian Bearpark

01/12/2010

Projects may be defined as a one-off event with a start, a finish and an outcome which could be some new plant, a product launch, a new IT system or a changed company structure. The decision to go ahead with a project is dependent on the strategy, need or requirement at the time and could happen for many reasons. This article will concentrate on capital plant installations but most of the principles detailed also apply to other types of project.

The maltings which refused to die - Tucker’s at Newton Abbot in Devon

By: Roger Putman

01/12/2010

As the train slows through Newton Abbot station, passengers will notice a long string of maltings buildings right beside the track on the London side. Every time I passed, I promised myself a stop over to take the short walk around to Teign Road. When I did I found that the building was twice the height from the road and most imposing.
