2010 sees the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in J. Boag & Son’s history. The northern Tasmanian brewery officially opened its new brewhouse on the 1st December 2009. Launceston has been the home of the brewing family of J. Boag & Son since 1880s, however brewing on this site along the north Esk River, and the Boag family connections, date back even further than that.

Breaking into Fiji, the paradise monopoly. The challenges when faced with setting up a brewery in the middle of the Pacific are enormous. From unstable government (Fiji has experienced no less than four coups in the last 19 years), to untold red tape and a frustratingly archaic excise system, tsunamis and cyclones, this project, in a monopoly market, has proven to be an exercise in patience and persistence. But, above all it has been a hugely enjoyable experience.

On 18th November 1968 I walked into the QC Laboratory at Castlemaine Perkins XXXX Brewery in Brisbane joining a conservative and patriarchal industry with regional markets. Australia had 26 breweries operated by nine companies: Carlton & United, Castlemaine Perkins, Coopers, Courage, South Australian, Swan, Tasmanian, Tooheys and Tooths.

Little Creatures Brewing commenced operations in an old boat shed on Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour in November 2000 with the idea of providing Australia with a hoppy, bottle-conditioned pale ale. After some initial tough times, customers came to like this ‘strange’ hoppy beer (hey, not many people appreciated hops in Australia back then!), word got out around the brewing scene and a following began to build.
