February will see the 21st Winter Olympic Games taking place in British Columbia at Vancouver, its largest city and the alpine resort town of Whistler some 120 km to the north along a rather windy road – ‘from the sea to the sky’. You do not get too many winter Olympic venues at sea level and not one where the average February temperature is almost 5°C.

Biofuels – to boldly go where no man has gone before... Anyone who has driven through the Mid-Western United States knows that a great deal of corn is grown in this region. There is a modern day fertile crescent for corn that stretches from Illinois in the east, through Iowa and Minnesota to South Dakota and Nebraska in the West. This is no accident, but the result of the most favorable soil and climate for this plant in the world. I was once told that in the peak growing season you could actually hear the corn growing in the field.
