NCYC Behind the (long lived) acronym!

By: David Quain

01/11/2008

We like our acronyms. The worlds of brewing and distilling are littered with them – using the initial letters of a name. The various takeovers and mergers of companies in our industry have resulted in an everchanging and bewildering landscape of acronyms. You know what I mean!

The European Beer Festival 2008

By: Nick Ricketts

01/11/2008

When I went to live in Copenhagen in 2000, I discovered it to be a town with many bars but few beers, as the choice was mainly between Carlsberg or Tuborg. How that has changed. Iain Russell was an early pioneer with Charlie’s Bar, serving anything but mainstream beers. He now has two pubs serving English cask conditioned beers and the cream of the Danish independents. The Dansk Oelentusiaster (OE – Danish beer enthusiasts) had just been formed to promote greater choice in beer. Charlie’s Cask Marque award in 2001 was seen as a pivotal event in the Danish beer revolution.

By: Roger Putman

01/11/2008

One thing which endears the Brits to the rest of the world is our retention of ancient and quaint customs. They do not come much more ancient or quainter than the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance which takes place in the Staffordshire village every September.

The brewery the Careys built: New Glarus

By: Daniel Carey

01/11/2008

There is a Louis Pasteur quotation painted on the wall of our original Brewhall reading: “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity”. It has a special meaning to me and my wife Deb. We have had a tough journey to say the least, but this year we are on track to sell over 90,000hl – all of it in Wisconsin. This is the story of our new $21 million brewery.

By: Roger Putman

01/11/2008

At the Brau Beviale Show last year, I met a chap on the Rexam stand with the rather unusual job title of Breakthrough Innovation Manager. With an innovative aluminium bottle called Fusion on show then, I went to see Stephen Howell to see whether there had been more breakthroughs in 2008.

Scotch Whisky – Threats and Opportunities

By: Alan Rutherford OBE

01/11/2008

Many of you will be regular readers of the annual Scotch Whisky Industry Review published by Alan Gray. Every year, Alan includes a section entitled ‘Issues and Problems Affecting the Industry’. In the latest Review, he lists 27 issues and if we take only the last of these : ‘Trade Barriers’ and move to page 75, we find 17 examples under this heading alone (Table 1). These are the threats but when I sat down and wrote out a list of opportunities, the topics were very similar. So opportunities arise from analysing threats and addressing them – as ever in life!

Always looking for ways to improve its energy efficiency, Coors worked with thermography experts ERIKS Electro Mechanical Services and initiated a survey, using thermal imaging traditionally used for condition monitoring, to study the heat and energy loss from diverse areas of its Burton on Trent facility. The exercise highlighted potential savings of £60,000 on the energy bill.

Weyermann in Bamberg - Much more than just malt

By: Ian Hornsey

01/11/2008

There were many highlights during last year’s Southern UK Section study tour to Nuremberg and Bamberg, but for me the most fascinating visit was to the specialist maltsters, Weyermann and its up-tothe- minute facility alongside the Bamberg to Nuremberg railway line at Brennerstrasse.
