Microbrewer sets new world mashing record ... or has he?
By: Moritz Kallmeyer
01/03/2009
Since its inception in January 1997 all the beer brewed at Drayman’s micro brewery has been handmashed only by myself in the same tiny 600-litre mash tun. I choose to do mashing, wort collection and wort kettle operations entirely on my own because of the close relationship I have with the beer I brew.

Energy continues to be a major topic for the whole industry. Crude oil hit an all time high of $145 a barrel last summer and while the on going recession has seen the commodity price dropping back to well below half that, the impact on energy prices for electricity and gas has been far more long-term with pricing in some areas still 50% higher than this time last year.

By: Sudhir Jain

This article is based on United Breweries’ journey towards water economy. The need to conserve water is part of our corporate social responsibility as well as being essential for our own survival. With 15% beer market growth year on year, water was increasingly becoming scarce.
Food security in Africa - The role of sorghum and millet
By: John Taylor
01/03/2009
The term Food Security means many different things to different people. Most definitions are narrow, encompassing the concept of ‘access to adequate food’ especially for subsistence farmers. I have a somewhat broader view. To me, Food security is where ‘a person has a livelihood that provides him and his dependents with access to safe water, adequate food, shelter, healthcare and education’.

Talbot & Talbot is nearing completion of its state of the art water recovery plant for Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) in Dar-es-Salaam. In the context of a city drastically short of water, the project will see the brewery reusing 65% of its wastewater for non-process activities. This effective recovery of water will demonstrate the brewery’s serious commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operation.

Zambian Breweries was established as Northern Breweries in Ndola on the Zambian Copperbelt in 1952. Like its present parent company, SABMiller, the Zambian Breweries Group traces its origins back to the noble ideal of satisfying the thirst of miners. The company was established in Ndola during the heady days of the mining boom on the Copperbelt in the early 1950s.
