A new world, a new way: Shene Estate and modern distilling in historic Australia
By: Shane McNamara

In the small town of Pontville, Tasmania, lies one of Australia’s oldest buildings, now home to one of its newest distilleries. The picturesque drive to the Shene Estate, located just 25 minutes north-west of Hobart city centre, follows the River Derwent and takes you past the world famous Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and on to the open landscape of Pontville. Apples from heaven ... Willie Smith’s celebrates heritage and innovation

The journey to Willie Smith’s took me down the windy A6 highway just 35 minutes south of Hobart to the small town of Huonville in the Huon Valley, Tasmania. The first thing you notice here is the fresh air (an appreciable difference to London), in fact, this is one of the most untouched places on earth and the air in Tasmania is officially recognised as some of the cleanest air in the world. The prevailing winds travel over one of the largest expanses of virgin forest wilderness in Australia before reaching the valley. With an annual average rainfall of 700mm, additional water is available from the Mountain River that flows through the Sleeping Beauty mountain range. Suffice to say – this is a little slice of heaven on earth – and the perfect place to start a cider business.
