A glass of Jenner’s Sparkling Ale is good enough for me!

The historic town of Lewes lies a few miles inland from the port of Newhaven on England’s south coast. The Dieppe ferry still ploughs back and forth; road signs urging motorists to drive on the left gradually peter out as you approach a gap in the chalky South Downs carved out by the River Ouse. Harvey’s Bridge Wharf Brewery sits right by the tidal river. A month’s rain in just two days, an equinoctial high tide driven on by a southerly wind prevented the water’s escape and in October 2000, the brewery was inundated to a depth of almost two metres. After a £2.5 million insurance claim and four years on, we sent Roger Putman to find out how they were getting on.
