Suffolk-based brewer Adnams beat fifteen other finalists to become the overall winner of the Carbon Trust/Daily Telegraph Innovation Awards 2007. The Carbon Trust is a private company set up by the UK government in response to the threat of climate change. It works with both industry and public sectors to create practical businessfocused solutions and accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy.

The Southern Section of the IBD organised a study tour of German breweries using the excellent services of John White who was a guide second to none with great knowledge and enthusiasm for beer and brewing. From the 16 to 20th May 2007 20 members and guests applied themselves to the study of German brewing and beer, some in much greater detail than others!

Being proximal to prime grain-growing country, Bury has long had a recorded association with beer and brewing, and it is one of only two towns mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book with brewers there being identified as cerevisiarii. Helston, in Cornwall is the other.

The top man says ‘We’ll build a state of the art, fully automated brewery’. These have been mostly large developments, often on ‘green-field’ sites, where consolidation of facilities produces large gains in productivity and reduced overall cost. Can it be that only in such circumstances that the high cost of automation can be justified when the ‘financial gurus’ run the figures through their laptops?
