Fosters Australia commissioned a new brewhouse at Yatala near Brisbane in Summer 2004. We take a look at Briggs role in the design, installation and commissioning of the new state of the art brewhouse, which resulted in substantial improvements in wort quality and beer flavour stability

The beer industry accepts that good quality is fundamental to sales and therefore the bottom line. It is well proven that good quality drives sales. Brulines was already well known within the licensed on-trade for its EDIS system (Electronic Draught Information System), developed following the 1989 Beer Orders Act. After six years of extensive trials and market research, EDIS was launched in 1995 as Dispense Monitoring that, in essence, records and analyses the volume of beer dispensed against time.

The distinguished list on the Secretaries Honours board at Clarges Street commences with E.B.Pymar MA DCL in 1904. If all those names have one thing in common, then it is probable that none had any previous experience of the brewing industry – indeed such a consideration was not an essential for the post.

50 years in the brewing industry

Horace Tabberer Brown was one of the original members of the Laboratory Club, which became the Institute of Brewing and was President of the Institute in 1891–92. In 1916 at a London Section meeting he read a paper “Reminiscences of 50 years experience of the application of Scientific Method to Brewing Practice”. As I have also been in brewing for 50 years – and my family 200 years in total – it seemed appropriate to do the same.
