A New Era: From the IBD to the CIBD
This year’s Presidential Dinner marked a significant milestone, as we transition to become the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers beginning in January 2025.
The Journal of the Institute of Brewing (JIB) is now exclusively published online in its new digital format at its new website – jib.ibd.org.uk
All papers are now available ‘open access’ without any fees for the authors or readers with full and free access to all published papers in ‘early view’.
We are delighted to announce that 129th volume of the Journal of the Institute of Brewing (JIB) has been published online in its new digital format at its new website – jib.ibd.org.uk
As noted previously, all papers are now available ‘open access’ without any fees for the authors or readers. There is now full and free access to all published papers in ‘early view’. Papers are immediately visible and downloadable as a pdf to read, use and store. In the past, such visibility - which applied recently to around one in three of all publications in JIB - would be chargeable to the authors (or their funders). Over time, the removal of this charge will hopefully result in more high-quality publications coming to JIB that currently go elsewhere. Groups of papers will continue to be published in four issues of JIB per year; a format that was established in 2002.
After some 120 years, this is the end of the hard copy of the Journal. Over time the number of volumes printed each quarter had dramatically declined as the majority of subscribers and libraries had switched to online access. We are however pleased to confirm that some papers will be selected to be re-published in Brewer and Distiller International to give further exposure of the work of JIB to the wider IBD membership. We are delighted to announce this first quarterly mini issue of JIB will be included in the May edition, to include the Editor-in-Chief’s ‘Reflections’ and a full set of abstracts.
A big thank you to the IBD team in getting these changes made; what on the face of it looks like a simple transformation has instead taken a great deal of time to ‘untangle’ and integrate into IBD systems and workflows. Thanks to Dan Griffiths (IT), Oliver Bremner (Design) and of course to Professor David Quain (Editor in Chief, Journal of the Institute of Brewing) in getting these into place over the last few months.
You can access both the current volume and the back catalogue (which at the moment is available via the Wiley Online Library), as well as submit a paper for publication via the IBD’s website at ibd.org.uk/resources/ibd-publications

We thank all our members who took part in this significant moment for our community by voting. The AGMs was an opportunity for our members to understand the key changes at the IBD as we finalise our transition to the CIBD.
When considering a career in the beverage industry, many of us were enticed in by the waft of sweetness from a freshly made mash, the heady scent of the angels’ share or the feeling of pride at seeing our perfectly dressed bottle on a supermarket fixture.
