Doug Donelan

Returning to his beloved Malt Shovel Brewery, Doug shares his extensive experiences over a lifetime in the brewing industry.

Doug has seen it all, working through several beer market cycles, starting in the Hahn Brewery in the early nineties, then moving through Lion group in technical, operations and innovation roles before returning to Malt Shovel Brewery as the first Head Brewer and working in establishing the James Squire Brand and their Brewhouses in Melbourne and Sydney.

Doug is recognised as an International Beer Judge at competitions in Australia, USA, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand where he was Chief Judge from 1999-2003.

As CEO of New Zealand Hops Limited, he served on the New Zealand Hop Research Committee for 12 years where he was instrumental in the selection, development and commercialisation of several new hop varieties.

He continues today to be involved as a beer judge and consultant to the Hop industry, focusing on advising growers and processors on hop quality parameters through sensory and technical analysis. His broader interests remain in the beverage sector having recently taken up a General Managers position with a contract bottling company in his home of Nelson in New Zealand.

Doug has been an IBD member since 1992 supporting local and regional activity through regular attendance of meetings, conventions and symposia both as a delegate and sponsor, chairing sessions and presenting. He has been a regular contributor to the BDI magazine with articles and crop reports while also supporting IBD activity, such as trade shows internationally. Doug was on the organizing committee for the AP Section's 35th Convention in Wellington 2018 and the 36th Convention in Perth 2020, and subsequent “Perth” virtual Convention in 2021. Doug served as a Director on the AP Section board for six years, retiring in 2021 and became a Fellow of the IBD in 2023.
