A message from the CEO
Few of us will have experienced any of what we now face. All of us will have differing levels of anxiety and concern for ourselves, our family and friends, particularly if they are far away or more vulnerable. We are taking the measures necessary to ensure, as far as we are able, that the health and wellbeing of staff at the IBD are prioritised and protected.
Alongside this we are mindful that we have members and candidates to support and that we need to do this is a very practical way. Unfortunately, we had to make some difficult decisions involving the postponement of events such as the Asia Pacific Convention and the Worldwide Distilled Spirits Conference along with many other smaller events. I particularly want to give my thanks and appreciation to all the IBD Section Chairs and volunteers on organising committees who have had to make decisions, at short notice and whilst also managing their own lives and businesses. I am pleased to say that we now have confirmed dates in 2021 for larger events.
We do need to ensure that the IBD continues to run so that we have a long-term future once we are on the other side (and there will be another side) of these events. Education and professionalism will make a big contribution towards industry recovery – we fully intend to play our part in this.
We have postponed exams which will now take place later in the year with an option of taking the Foundation and Certificate exams at home through remote proctoring. Further details of these and other changes are available here.
Fortunately, we are well positioned to support members and candidates with all staff able to work from home.
Face to face courses have been postponed with new dates available later in the year and we will be in direct contact with those candidates who are already registered. We have been delivering online tutor guided learning since last year and will be exploring ways to widen this to more candidates.
For members unable to travel to events we will be seeking ways to deliver more content online through webinars and will do our best to assist members who are unfamiliar or hesitant with using the technology.
For our section committees we will be supporting communications through teleconferencing.
We are all in this together and I hope we will find strength in our community, a new generosity of spirit and can look forward to a better world in the wake of the challenges we face together.
Keep well and stay connected
