Ian Hamilton - Diploma in Brewing Module 1 Tutor

Ian is an award-winning Master Brewer with an extensive and successful international career in the brewing industry spanning over 40 years. 

Ian started his career at Smithwick’s Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1981, where he gained floor malting experience as well as brewing and packaging. Later, he joined Guinness Africa, spending over 13 years in Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria in brewing and technical roles, before returning to Kilkenny as Head Brewer and Site Director in 2001. 

Since leaving Diageo in 2014, Ian has been involved in training for IBD exams and as a Master Brewer for Sullivan’s Brewing Co. As Master Brewer, Ian produced Maltings Ale, which went on to win Gold and Champion International Keg Ale at the prestigious International Brewing Awards in 2016 and 2017.  

Ian has been an IBD member since the beginning of his career in 1981, achieving the Master Brewer qualification and, in 2018, becoming a Fellow of the Institute.

As one of the IBD’s most seasoned trainers, Ian’s expertise as a tutor will be invaluable for Diploma in Brewing candidates.

Ian moved to the SW Coast of Ireland recently but is still a regular visitor to Kilkenny and beyond. Geology and Motorcycle touring are his main hobbies -when possible!
